WE RELATE FROM the Ṣaḥīḥ of al-Bukhārī that ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb
reported that when the husband of his daughter Ḥafṣah
passed away he said, “I met ‘Uthmān
and offered her to him in marriage. I said: ‘If you wish, I will give you Ḥafṣah, daughter of ‘Umar, in marriage.’ He said: ‘I will look into my affairs.’ I waited a few days, then he met me and said: ‘It has become apparent to me that I should not marry now.’ Then I met Abū Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq
and said: ‘If you wish, I will give you Ḥafṣah, daughter of ‘Umar, in marriage.’ Abū Bakr
kept quiet.” Then he mentioned the rest of the hadith. [1].
