Supplicating and performing taḥnīk for a baby
Context
WE RELATE FROM the Sunan of Abū Dāwūd, with ṣaḥīḥ isnāds, that ‘Ā’ishah
said: “Babies were brought to the Messenger of Allah
, so he supplicated and performed taḥnīk [1].for them” [2].; and according to one narration, “then he would make du‘ā’ for blessings for them.”

[1] Taḥnīk means chewing something sweet until it is almost liquid, and then opening the mouth of the newborn baby and putting it in.
