The prohibition of lying, and an explanation of types of lie
Context
THE TEXT OF the Qur’ān and the Sunnah corroborate the view that lying is totally ḥarām and that it is one of the ugliest sins and the vilest defects. Those texts apart, there is general consensus in the Ummah that it is unlawful, and so there is no need to cite individual texts. It is only important to mention the exceptions and explain them in detail. The following hadiths, whose authenticity is agreed upon, are sufficient as a deterrent against [lying].
