WE RELATE FROM the Ṣaḥīḥs of al-Bukhārī and Muslim that Abū Hurayrah
reported that the Messenger of Allah
said: “Our Lord comes down to the lowest Heaven in the last third of every night and says: ‘Who will supplicate to Me, that I may answer his prayer? Who will ask of Me, that I may give to him? Who will ask Me for forgiveness, that I may forgive him?’”256 According to a narration in Muslim he
said: “Every night, Allah
comes down to the earthly Heaven when the first third of the night has passed and says: ‘I am the King, I am the King. Who will supplicate to Me, that I may answer his prayer? Who will ask of Me, that I may give to him? Who will ask Me for forgiveness, that I may forgive him?’ He continues to do this until the break of dawn.” According to another report he said: “When half the night or two-thirds of the night has passed.” [1].
And we relate from the Sunans of Abū Dāwūd and at-Tirmidhī from ‘Amr ibn ‘Abasah
who reported that he heard the Prophet
say: “The closest that the Lord comes to His servants is during the last part of the night. So if you are able to be among those who remember Allah
at that time, do so.” [2].At-Tirmidhī classes this hadith as ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.
